Honeycomb emat toy for dogs

Hi there Rosalind here, owner of WildLifeRx. While working for a Veterinarian I have heard of my share of 'What should I do now?' from pet owners the day after Halloween. Cats throwing up after eating candy, and yes ...a dog that ate the balloons off of their kids costume. It is a lot for any pet owner. Below is a list that may decrease some of these issues. You've got this!

Halloween Tool Kit:

Toys, Halloween Sweater, Calming Supplements, Treaters, Frozen Veggies, Pumpkin (dogs) or Canned Tuna (cats), Favorite Bedding, Crate, Large Blanket, Leash, X-Large Plastic Bag, Lavender Spray or Essential Oil and Large Secure Container.

  1. If you are using a supplement to decrease anxiety, administer it 2 hours before the first trick or treater arrives. This is critical as once your pet is stressed, any supplement may not be as effective prior to the stress. It is perfectly safe to administer another dose, 4 hours after the first dose.

  2. Feed your pet their meal in parts. Divide it in 4 parts and feed them every 30- 40 minutes as this will distract them from any noise near the door. Use a treater or licker to administer the meal, lengthening the time they eat.

  3. Use a treater and stuff it with frozen green vegetables mixed with pumpkin or CBD infused peanut butter.

  4. Place cozy bedding or a crate in a room with the curtains/blinds closed. Introduce this new area to your pet several times earlier in the week, so they know they have a quiet space to retreat to if needed. Place a blanket on top of the crate if need.

  5. Play louder than softer calming music.

  6. Put a leash on all pets and secure them to a table or heavy object in a location away from the front door. Think desk, bedpost, kitchen table. Keep the front door open to avoid excessive door knocks and doorbell rings.

  7. During the day, take your pets on a long walk. Tired pets may be less anxious.

  8. Keep all unused doors and gates locked so pets are not tempted to escape.

  9. Pets do not like itchy costumes and this may add to their stress. Dress them up in a Halloween-inspired sweater instead.

  10. During the day, place all candy in a sealed secure container and at the end of the night, place it on a shelf that your pets can not reach.

  11. Go into the kids room and place all costumes that contains candy, balloons, balls and such into a large plastic bag and hang it up. If you do just these 2 things, there will be 99% chance, your Halloween will not involve a visit to the emergency vet.

  12. Your pets may need help winding down. Ok to use lavender spray/essential oil on their bedding, collar or blankets. Lavender oil is perfectly safe to use on the bedding of pets.

Homemade Treats for Pets

During The First Few Weeks:

Give Your Pet Some Space: Talk calmly to your new pet and be available for him but let your pet come up to you for the first 2-4 weeks. Since you don't know how your pet's past has affected him or if there are trust issues, it is best to avoid smothering them. If they prefer to sit on the floor in another room, you can sit near him for a few minutes and offer him some treats and talk quietly reassuring him that you care. If he doesn't want to come near you, leave a few pieces of food on the floor and he will approach it and eat it when he is ready. Make sure that the new pet has his own blanket and/or bed and leave it in an area he feels safe in. He will learn that you aren’t there to harm him. This may take time, be patient as this may take a few months.

Look Out for Stress-Related Issues: You could be the most understanding pet parent in the entire world and your pet still might be experiencing some PTSD stress. Rescued pets have had many changes and no matter how loving you are to them, all this change can still be stressful. Look out for symptoms such as diarrhea, shaking, vomiting, and not sleeping. Make sure that these symptoms are not food or parasitic-related. Creating a calm and quiet environment may help your pet adjust. Calm music, lavender candles, kids not yelling or running around, and leaving treats for him near his blanket and bed that contain chamomile and valerian root may naturally reduce your pet's stress.

Feeding And House Training Troubles Can Occur: Most pets like to eat but for pets that are stressed, eating food can amplify their anxiety. Try placing treats or drizzle peanut butter over the food to tempt them. Along with that, rescued pets may have not had clear routines in the past, resulting in them not being house trained. Many pets haven’t had a stable meal routine and exercise schedule. Once this has been established by you, they can depend on it and this can be a source that is calming to them.

Getting Comfortable with you and other members of their new family:

Start Slow: Getting used to one another is not just stressful for your pet but everyone in the household. A new family member can be a source of comfort and strain. Rescued dogs may have come from a chaotic unstable home or loving home and this new experience may cause them to put their guard up. Make sure that everyone in the household allows the adjustment to naturally occur. Current pets and new pets should be monitored until you know that they will respect one another.

All of this takes time, and it is most important to be patient, prepared, and flexible! Just remember, every pet and family has an adjustment period. Your rescued pet will eventually feel safe enough to show you affection and happiness.

Homemade Treats for Pets

Our pets are special to us. This means the treats we give our pets should be just as special. The organic, gluten-free, and vegan industry is booming and many health-interested pet owners are wanting to increase their pet's health with wholesome food choices. Not all packaged pet food contains uncertain chemicals but many pet owners want better than a packaged treat, purchased at a big box online store made out of who knows really what.

Homemade Treats:

If you find yourself with a little extra free time, or simply like to bake, homemade treats are a great way to spoil your pet! By making dog treats from home, pet owners have control over what goes into their pets’ treats. They are chemical-free and can be made with wholesome ingredients that your pet may need such as antioxidants or more fiber.

Gina Green, a pet food researcher has studied how some red-flag ingredients like BHA, BHT, Ethoxyquin, Sodium Met bisulfite, and TBHQ lead to poor gut health in your pet. 'The Guardian' in 2021 posted that many raw food zero carb pet food diets may be related to increasing canine heart disease. These unhealthy ingredients are found in manufactured food and treats.

Making treats for your dog can be fun and here are a few of our favorites that you can try:

Recipes:

Brown Dog with pumpkin

Pumpkin Carrot Bites

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup organic canned pumpkin unsweetened

  • 1 egg

  • ¼ cup shredded carrots

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325° degrees.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, stir all ingredients (pumpkin, egg, carrots, and flour) until combined and the dough is moist.

  3. With a spoon or your hands, roll the dough into small balls and place it on a baking sheet. (You may use a little flour to prevent the dough from sticking to surfaces).

  4. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.

Peanut Butter and Banana CBD Dog Treats

This easy recipe could be the starting point to treating your furry friend’s anxiety, inflammation and pain.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe banana, mashed

  • ¼ cup organic peanut butter (zero added or low sugar and salt)

  • 2 cups of old-fashioned oats

  • 1 tablespoon 100% Organic CBD Oil

  • Coconut oil

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 325°.

  2. In a small bowl, go ahead and mix a tablespoon of coconut oil and however many milligrams of CBD oil you would like to administer to your pet. (Look at the chart below for dosage recommendations). We use coconut oil because it is a great infuser for CBD. It is high in fatty acids that create a strong binding agent for the cannabinoids in CBD oil.

  3. Add your oats into a blender and blend until you get a flour-like consistency. Then, in a medium-sized mixing bowl, add 1 ripe, mashed, banana, followed by peanut butter and the infused coconut oil. Mix thoroughly. Stir this mixture together with the blended oats and stir thoroughly until the dough has moistened.

  4. Slightly dust a flat surface with whatever flour you prefer, then use your hands to shape the dough into a circle, about ¼ thick inch. You may roll out the dough and use a cookie cutter to cut out the treats. Place the cutouts on a non-stick cookie sheet.

  5. Bake cookies until golden brown for approximately 25-30 minutes depending on the thickness and size of the treats. With the measurements included in this recipe, you can make about 30 treats for 1-inch-thick treats or 15 for 2-inch treats.

A CBD Dosage Guide for Dogs Based on Serving Size and Weight

  • 10-25lbs - 1/2th teaspoon

  • 26-50lbs - 1 teaspoon

  • 51-75lbs - 1 1/2 teaspoon

  • 76-100lbs - 2 teaspoons

*Note: you may add 1/2 to the dosage if you prefer more CBD*

When picking out your pet’s CBD Oil make sure it is purchased from a retailer that evaluates the products they sell.

Check for:

  • Organic/non-GMO ingredients

  • No chemicals, preservatives or synthetic dyes.

  • Learn what ingredients are safe and which should not be used. For example, dogs can not digest skin such as grape skin or apple skin but green bean skin and blueberry skin is perfectly safe.
